Director of Food and Beverage Happiest In and Around the Kitchen at Shipley Living Senior Living Community in Wilmington

Cyril (Cy) Stewart has been the Director of Food and Beverage at Shipley Living senior living community in Wilmington for seven years and was the Executive Chef at its sister community, Millcroft Living in Newark, for five years prior to that. In and around the kitchen is where he loves to be. “In a nutshell,” he quipped, “I am responsible for coordinating the food and beverages for our residents.”  A self-professed foodie, he said, “I like planning,  cooking,  presenting nice meals, hosting events, everything. Everything! This role is perfect for me.” 

Cy said that the staff and management are integral to the job he loves. “We have a great team. We all understand each other and help each other with whatever needs to be done. And Life Care Services (LCS), which manages Shipley Living, is wonderful. They’re really invested in the community, and since they’ve been working with us, have given the community a facelift and, really, a new identity.”

At the top of the list of what he loves at Shipley Living, he said,  are the residents who are kind and grateful. Cy said that he feels purposeful and valued.

An added benefit to his job, which he greatly enjoys, is the ability to help shape young people new to the workforce and the senior living industry. “For many of our young team, including servers, this may be their first job, and I want it to be special. It’s important to me that I am helping them to develop skills that they will carry out the rest of their lives. Even if they don’t pursue careers in dining, they’ll have some understanding of food, nutrition, and work ethic. And I’ve been able to help people grow,” he said. “One young person came into the senior living community as a server and, through the years, has climbed the ranks in dining. He is a general manager in a restaurant, where he meets famous people all the time. That makes me proud.”
