Strong Ties Lead to Long Tenure at Shipley Living in Wilmington

In an industry known for high staff turnover rates,  Shipley Living is an admirable exception. The senior living community in Wilmington has attracted staff members who feel that the residents and fellow employees are like family, which, in turn, inspires devotion.

Jennifer Good is a perfect example. The resident of Wilmington has worked at Shipley Living for 12 years, starting right after high school. ‘I can’t say enough about how much the staff loves our residents,” she said. “I love coming to work every day.”

Good, a life enrichment coordinator at Shipley Living,  completed the CNA program as a student at Delcastle Technical High School in Wilmington. “I always wanted to work in health care,” she said. “I thought I wanted to be in pediatrics, but my first job was as a CNA here, at Shipley Living, and once you get into geriatrics, you never want to leave.”

A Jack-Of-All-Trades

Through the years, she has worked in different roles at the senior living community. “I have helped out in assisted living and independent living. They tell me I’m a jack-of-all-trades. I wear many hats. I sometimes work the reception desk and drive the bus to doctors’ appointments or shopping. If something needs to be done and I can do it, then I do,” she said. “I now spend much of my time in activities. Since I know the residents, I have learned what they like and dislike and am able to encourage them to participate in programs.” She is hoping to soon become certified to become an activities director.

Sharing Her Joy With Her Children

The mother of six said she has brought all of her children with her through the years to visit with residents, assist with activities, and help with random jobs around the community. “My 14-year-old son, who is a little bit shy, has helped organize the shed here. My 13-year-old daughter is very creative and helps with activities. My 11 and 8-year-old sons will play bingo and do art projects. The baby comes and entertains the residents,” she said.

Good’s eldest son, Eric Pennington, recently began working in the independent living dining room. She’s excited to share her devotion and satisfaction for seniors with him. “I am happy and feel purposeful.”
